In the dark heart of sub-Arctic winter, the Shetland capital of Lerwick ignites with the roaring flames of Up Helly Aa. This world-renowned festival marks the end of the Yule season and pays homage to Shetland's deep Viking heritage.
The Guizer Jarl & His Squad
The festival is spearheaded by the Guizer Jarl (the Chief Viking), who plans the spectacle for up to 15 years in advance. Accompanying him is his Jarl Squad, dressed in elaborate custom armor with hand-forged axes, shields, and winged helmets.
The Night Procession & Galley Burning
As 7:00 PM approaches, streetlights across Lerwick are switched off. A maroon rocket signals the ignition of over 1,000 paraffin-soaked torches. Led by the Guizer Jarl standing atop a handcrafted Viking longship (galley), the torchbearers march through the darkened streets singing traditional Norse anthems.
The climax occurs at King George V Park, where all 1,000 torches are hurled into the galley, engulfing the ship in a towering inferno while brass bands play the 'Up Helly Aa Song'.
Official Shetland Tourism & Up Helly Aa Committee
Tickets to indoor evening dance halls are strictly allocated by local secret committees, but the outdoor torch procession and galley burning are free to view for all visitors along the main street route.
