Every year on the final Wednesday of August, the quiet town of Buñol in Valencia transforms into a surging sea of crimson pulp. La Tomatina is world-renowned as the largest food fight on the planet, drawing over 20,000 festival enthusiasts from every corner of the globe.
Origins & Cultural Legend
The festival started in 1945 during a local parade of 'Gigantes y Cabezudos' (giants and big-heads). A scuffle broke out near a vegetable stand, leading townsfolk to hurl tomatoes at one another. Despite temporary bans during the 1950s under Franco's regime, local persistence turned it into an official town tradition, officially sanctioned in 1957.
Essential Rules & Safety Instructions
- Squash tomatoes before throwing: Always crush the tomato in your hand first to avoid causing impact injuries to fellow revellers.
- Eye Protection: Swimming goggles or sealed protective eyewear are mandatory to shield your eyes from citric acid.
- No glass or hard objects: Only soft tomatoes delivered by official town trucks are permitted inside the barricaded zone.
- Respect the sound signal: The tomato fight strictly begins at 11:00 AM with a water cannon blast and ends precisely one hour later at 12:00 PM upon the second blast.
Official Event Ticket Information
To preserve historical architecture and prevent overcrowding, the Town Council of Buñol caps entry at 20,000 official passes. Unregistered visitors cannot enter the central plaza area.
